It’s not every day that a football team gets the chance to represent their country at a major international tournament.
But the 2016 World Cup has proved that when Italy get there, they’re going to have a very good excuse to do just that.
While it was a very positive result for the Italians, it’s still a bit of a shock to see them on top of the world after their first-ever tournament win.
The team has come so close to winning the tournament twice already this summer, with a 4-1 thrashing of Brazil at the Maracana on Thursday and a 2-0 win over Portugal in the first round on Saturday.
But there were some pretty major setbacks along the way, with two of their three losses being in the group stage.
The last time they came close to victory was at the 2014 World Cup when they were defeated 3-1 by eventual champions Germany.
It’s still not as impressive as the success they achieved in South Africa and France, but Italy were able to overcome those two disappointments with a win in the quarter-finals.
They’re currently on the verge of a World Cup berth and have a chance to become just the fourth team to qualify from the group stages.
That’s no easy feat when you have a relatively inexperienced squad and have lost just one of their past four games.
The result was a real testament to the hard work and dedication of the players and their coaches, who made a very clear statement by beating the reigning champions in front of a raucous home crowd.
It’ll be a lot of fun watching the Italian side take on Germany in the final in Berlin.
