The new culture of the long story, in which a story is less about what is happening in the story and more about the individual characters and their motivations, is the next frontier for the publishing industry.
“It’s very much a new concept,” said Nick Schafer, the chief executive of Random House and co-author of the new book The New Culture of the Short Story.
“There is this whole new wave of stories that we have to get ready for.”
In short, the long-form stories that have become a staple of the genre, like a book like this, will be different.
“The long-fiction story is one of the most enduring elements of the literary canon,” said Schafer.
“This is about exploring these ideas and seeing how they can be used for stories.”
The book covers some of the biggest questions about storytelling and culture in the short form, such as the role of race and gender in the medium, how to tell stories from a first-person point of view and how to make stories with more characters.
In the book, Schafer writes about how the long form, including the short fiction, is increasingly becoming the new canon of American fiction.
“As we start to explore the longform, we will find it has all the hallmarks of the culture of literature,” Schafer said.
“And we will also find it to be a genre that has a lot to offer to the rest of the world.”
For example, Schafe said, “The short story has a way of being universal, but the long is a universal story, and you have to be able to adapt to a world that is changing and adapt to different ideas.”
The short story is the best way to tell the stories of people who are not white, the book’s authors said.
While there is a history of the book being written by African-Americans, Schafers mother was a White woman, and the book is a reflection of how the world is changing for people of color.
“In this moment in American history, there are not a lot of books that are written about Black people, and it is a privilege for me to write about Black women, and I really wanted to do a book about women of color,” Schafsara said.
The authors hope to use the book as a blueprint for how to write stories about diversity.
“We want to make sure that we are telling stories that reflect what is being said about race, gender, class, sexuality, disability, age, ethnicity and geography,” Schafe wrote in an email.
“What we need to do is to think about what our characters and themes are and to explore those ideas and the implications of that.”
The authors say that as the publishing market evolves, they want to focus more on the stories that are more popular with young readers.
“A lot of people don’t read books,” said one of Schafber’s co-authors, Caitlin Dewey.
“They’re more likely to pick up a book, watch a TV show, listen to music or play a game.
So we want to be more aware of how we can tell stories that they want and not that they need.”
The new book, which will be available in September, will also feature some of Schafers most famous short stories.
The collection includes stories like “In The Woods” and “Lion of the West,” which were written when he was a kid in the 1960s, and “The Story of the Town,” written when Schafer was a teenager.
“I wrote them when I was 17 years old,” Schaffers co-writer, Caitlyn Dewey, said.
Schaferson’s short stories are also among his most popular.
He told Recode that the book has been downloaded more than 100,000 times.
“For me, it’s always about trying to create a narrative that has the power to change the way people relate to things,” he said.
But not all of the stories in the book will be relevant today.
Some will be more relevant to the way we live today.
“My favorite story is a story about how a child in Africa was taken from his family,” Dewey said.
Dewey also believes that “the story that is most important for the people of today, and that’s the story about racism, is about how people were able to come together and fight for a better world.”
